Podgorica Airport is small in the way that works in your favour. One terminal, one baggage belt, and a walk from the aircraft door to your car measured in minutes rather than the three-quarters of an hour a bigger hub would cost you. For anyone driving on afterwards, that compactness is the whole argument for flying here.
It is also the most connected starting point in the country. Driving in Montenegro starts easily from here: Ostrog is about an hour, Skadar Lake half of that, the Albanian border thirty minutes, and the coast an hour through the Sozina tunnel. Nowhere else in Montenegro puts that much within reach of the car park.
What Podgorica Airport Is Like to Arrive Into
The terminal sits twelve kilometres south of the city on flat, open ground, with a single runway and perhaps fifteen to twenty movements on a normal weekday. Arrivals come down air-stairs onto the apron and walk a painted line to passport control, so in heavy rain you get wet and in August you squint. There is no jetbridge and there is no shuttle bus to an off-site compound.
The arrivals hall is one rectangular room. The cash machine works around the clock, passport control has four booths of which two are usually staffed, and the exit doors put you within sight of the short-stay parking. It is the kind of airport you can be driving away from twenty minutes after the wheels touch.
Where to Collect Your Hire Car at the Airport
Collection is arranged for the time your flight lands, at a point agreed when you book, and the details reach you before you travel. Give the flight number at the booking stage and a delay moves the handover rather than costing you the car. All you need in hand is your driving licence, your passport and the booking reference, with the physical licence rather than a photograph of it.

The airport is one of seven collection points on this side of the country, and you are not tied to it. The Hilton Crna Gora, Hotel Podgorica, the Mall of Montenegro, Big Fashion mall and the Railway Station all work if you would rather start in the city a day later, and city delivery brings the car to an address instead. Whichever you choose, one-way within Montenegro means the car does not have to come back to the terminal at the end.

Podgorica Airport is small enough that the walk from the aircraft to the short-stay car park is measured in minutes, not signposts. Anything you add at booking is fitted to the vehicle before you cross that distance, the difference between a smooth onward drive and a tired family rummaging in a car-park lot. Infant, toddler, and booster child seats are installed and tested in advance so a sleeping toddler does not need to be unbuckled twice in fifteen minutes. A Montenegrin SIM card or a wireless hotspot is handed across with the keys, useful for guests who landed with roaming switched off and want maps working before the motorway slip road. Roof racks, ski racks, and snowboard racks are bolted on for January arrivals heading direct to Kolašin or Žabljak, no city detour required. Returning Your Rental Car to the Terminal
Returns are the easy half. The short-stay parking is directly outside the terminal, so there is no compound to find and no bus to catch with luggage, and the walk from the space to the check-in desk is a couple of minutes. Allow for fuel rather than for the return itself: the last cheap filling station is on the access road, and the prices on the coast and in the mountains are consistently higher.
If the trip finishes somewhere other than here, it does not have to come back. One-way rentals within Montenegro let the car be dropped at the coast or at another airport, with the combinations and any transfer fee confirmed when you book.
Driving Out of Podgorica Airport: The First Hour
The access road feeds straight onto the M2, dual carriageway, with no traffic lights for the first six kilometres. North takes you past the city and onto the motorway toward Kolasin and the mountains. South runs flat and fast to Skadar Lake and the Albanian border at Bozaj, about half an hour away.
For the coast, stay south on the M2 and take the Sozina tunnel under the ridge, which puts Budva and Bar within an hour of the terminal. West on the E80 heads toward Niksic and the Ostrog turnoff. Every one of those is sealed, modern road for the part that matters, and the demanding stretches, the Moraca canyon and the climb to Ostrog, are optional rather than unavoidable.
Between November and March the cars carry winter equipment, which is what makes the mountain roads a reasonable thing to attempt on the day you land rather than a gamble on the forecast.

Which Car Suits a Podgorica Arrival
The airport asks nothing of the car; the week after it does. If the plan runs north into the mountains, the engine matters more than the size, because small petrol engines lose noticeable power with altitude and the ski towns sit above 1,400 metres. If it runs to the coast, think about parking instead, because the bays in Kotor and Budva are tight and fill early. If it is the lake and the border, almost anything will do.
The one decision worth making early either way is the gearbox. Automatics are a smaller share of the cars here than in western Europe and they sell out first in summer, and they are the easier car on both the Ostrog climb and a stop-start coastal August. The breakdown of what each class handles is more use than a single recommendation.
Car Hire Insurance and Border Crossings
Third-party liability is on every car and the level of cover is chosen at checkout, up to a tier that holds no deposit at all. Because this airport is where most trips begin, it is also where the decision is cheapest to make: adding cover at the booking stage costs less thought than deciding about it on the day with a queue behind you.
Borders matter more from here than from the coastal airports. Albania is thirty minutes, and Croatia, Bosnia, Serbia and Kosovo are all reachable. Any of them needs cross-border approval added to the booking and a Green Card issued for the car in advance, and neither can be arranged at the barrier. What You Can Reach by Car from Podgorica Airport
Podgorica itself is fifteen minutes. Skadar Lake and the Albanian border are both about thirty. Ostrog is an hour, Kolasin a little over, and Zabljak and the Durmitor plateau roughly two. Budva is an hour through the tunnel, Kotor about ninety minutes, and Tivat a similar time round the bay.
